By Sean Averette Photo provided by Ducks Unlimited The Baton Rouge Chapter of Ducks Unlimited gathered at the Pennington Conference Center in April for their annual banquet which celebrated the club's 80 years of coastal conservation efforts with dinner and drinks between longtime friends, as well as fundraisers to support their environmental preservation efforts in Louisiana. While each annual banquet is a special occasion for members of Ducks Unlimited in Baton Rouge, this year's banquet marks an important milestone in the chapter's history as proceeds from the event's auctions and donations will fund the first Ducks Unlimited land acquisition in Louisiana, better known as the "White Acquisition." Covering more than 1,700 acres of marsh and wetland environments adjacent to the Salvador Wildlife Management Area, the White Acquisition is an important step toward revitalizing the beloved coast in Louisiana. With the vocal and financial support of Ducks Unlimited, the land will receive the protection it deserves while providing a special place for all Louisianans to preserve and interact with Louisiana's coast and wetland ecosystems. The land purchased through the White Acquisition will be placed with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on a cost-share basis and allow for public hunting during the season. This move reflects the organization's mission to promote conservation and support the future of waterfowl hunting. A significant portion of the proceeds from the event's donations and variety of auction prizes also raised money for two additional Louisiana coastal restoration projects that are shovel-ready and provide yet another example of the role that Duck Unlimited plays in leading conservation efforts in Louisiana and beyond. Ducks Unlimited is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated upland habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. As an organization with chapters across the United States, members support efforts to restore grasslands and watersheds, replant forests, work with landowners and land managers, lead research initiatives, promote conservation, protect habitats for waterfowl species and revitalize Louisiana's coast.
