30 When you donate goods to The Salvation Army, those items are then sold at our Family Stores. The proceeds fund a 53-bed Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Center where men seeking to overcome addiction find help, hope and a second chance at life. The center operates 365 days a year, at no cost to the men seeking recovery. It is the largest free in-patient substance abuse rehabilitation program in Baton Rouge, and just one of the many community services offered by The Salvation Army—which has been serving the Capital Area since 1905. The six to nine-month recovery program, which costs The Salvation Army approximately $10,000 per person, is funded by generous corporate support and through the sale of donated goods. As Corps Officer Major Donald Tekautz affirmed, "To see men's lives transformed gives hope to families, friends and the community. It's worth every bit of the effort!" René Daigle has experienced the life-changing impact of donated goods firsthand. A rapid-fire series of family tragedies landed René in a very low spot in his life and, seeking relief from grief, he turned to alcohol. When he came to The Salvation Army, he'd fallen to his lowest point. The support he received through the recovery program over the course of many months restored his health, his spirit and his faith. "It was a blessing that I ended up at The Salvation Army," said René. René, having successfully graduated from the program in the spring of 2018, finds himself right in the middle of things at The Salvation Army Family Store, where he now works as a store clerk. Smiling from ear to ear, René exclaims "I am so grateful and happy to be where I am now. I have my life back, better than before!" Like the hit Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo advocates, if the clutter doesn't give you joy, perhaps it is time let it go and let it bring someone else, like René, the joy of a new life!
