? The Ever-So-Confusing World of Fashion Spring and Summer 2013 Trends By Mandy Bradley 40 Read us online at It seems like it is already spring time in Louisiana, so we are especially ready to transition into our warmer weather wardrobes. We alternate between sweaters and shorts most weeks, but we know that "spring" is coming. Get your feet to the nearest nail salon, slap a little tanner on your legs, and get ready for the long, hot months ahead. This spring designers presented the entire spectrum: color, black and whites, and lots of neutral. There is something for every taste. From form-fitting and short to long and flowing, there are also silhouettes to suit every body type and style. Of course the spring staples are available: Black and white, bright colors, and florals, but there are definitely modern twists on these perennial offerings. The combination of black and white is one of the biggest trends this spring. One of the best parts of investing in black and white separates or accessories is that they work with just about any color, can be used throughout the year, and basics can usually be found at lower price points. My advice would be to spend less on basics in white and black and then splurge on a eye-catching clutch or pair of shoes. One of my favorite pieces from the collections is a large black and white striped leather clutch from Marc Jacobs. You could wear that with everything! Another huge trend is showing skin. There are so many offerings from designers that feature cut outs. Some garments have large cut outs that expose sides, and others simply show a shoulder or a bit of the upper chest. Sheer panels and overlays also offer a glimpse at skin but with a feeling of modesty (depending on where the panel is, of course). If you are younger, the cropped top with a high-waist pant or skirt is a modern look. Make sure that you look high-end, not inappropriate. Flashing your belly button is not the trend, just showing a sliver of midriff is. One of the trends that I would invest in is simple: White. White dresses, white button downs, chic white pointy toed heels, white cropped skinny jeans or pants—the list is endless. You can't go wrong layering things with white. I realize that white is high maintenance, but who doesn't look bright and refreshed in white? Designers offered so many textures and variations that it should be a no brainer. And while leathers and cropped jackets don't particularly work in our climate, you never know when you may travel or if we may have a rare cool evening. Designers offered soft leathers in dresses, skirts, jackets, and tops. The blazers and cropped jackets in bright colors are a perfect item to throw on with a tank and skinnies for a chic, casual look. Whatever trends you decide to embrace or continue with this season, remember to never go too far with one trend. Take a piece or two from each trend and incorporate it into your current wardrobe or favorite pieces. On big investments, try to purchase items that may transition into the next season, as well.
