Academy Award BUZZ Louisiana's Nominated Gem - Beasts of the Southern Wild The 85th Annual Academy Awards are being presented on February 24, and the nominees have now been announced. Congratulations to Beasts of the Southern Wild for receiving a total of 4 nominations: Best Picture, Best Director (Behn Zeitlin), Best Actress in a Lead Role (Quvenzhane Wallis) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Behn Zeitlin). The Louisiana International Film Fesitival (LIFF) has a special relationship with the cast and crew as they had the honor of hosting the film's prerelease screening on July 19, 2012, in Baton Rouge. The Festival was an early advocate of the film, which was shot in Louisiana in 2011. LIFF hosted a prerelease screening of the film on June 19th, 2012. The Beasts of the Southern Wild also claimed the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and the Cannes Film Festival Camera D'Or. In attendance last summer were the film's stars, including Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Gina Montana, Henry D. Coleman, Lowell Landes and Nathan Harrison (Associate Producer). "We're are really happy for the filmmaker's on a personal level and are very grateful their substantial contribution to the independent film movement here in Louisiana," said LIFF Executive Director Chesley Heymsfield. This acclaimed and nominated film centers around "Hushpuppy" played by Quevenzhane' Wallis,(New Orleans native and Academy Award and Oscar nominee) who is faced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love. This story, warm as the Louisiana sun, has melted the hearts of the critics abroad.
