21 A few excellent museums that deal with area history include the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance, the Fur Trade Museum, and the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in Chadron, which highlights a remarkable woman who wrote of the Sandhills region. I recommend reading Sandoz's novels or Loren Avey's massive history tome, Lynchings, Legends and Lawlessness with Boot Hill Mysteries, a history of Sidney that offers insight into the develop- ment of western Nebraska, when visiting. For something unusual, there's Carhenge near Alliance, painted cars buried to resemble Stonehenge in England, and the Petrified Wood and Art Gallery in Ogallala, where twin brothers Harvey and Howard Kenfield brilliantly capture their heritage in tiny pieces of petrified wood.
