C o m By Kristen Cockrell In February of 2013, Angela and Roi Lee put their entrepreneurial ideas together to create a unique com- pany that sells designer handbags. Angela told Roi after they began dating that she would love to design and create affordable handbags. Excited to step on board, Roi began to share Angela's dream. After attending an AIDS fashion show, where all guests were wearing red, the couple decided to use a donate-by-color concept for their handbags. This inspired Roi—his father, who has suffered from brain stroke, diabetes and a kidney replacement, always told him that health was the most important thing in life. Roi and Angela decided to focus on health issues for their donate-by-color handbags. Roi, who concentrated in entrepreneurship at the Boston University School of Management, uses his edu- cation and previous business experience to run the management, marketing and operational divisions of Angela & Roi handbags. Angela, who has worked in fashion merchandising and is currently studying political science at Northeastern University, designs each handbag for the company and creates image concepts for LookBook. All Angela & Roi handbags are made with animal-friendly materials. In fact, the bags are all made with vegan leather, which is composed of a synthetic fiber, as well as other durable materials. All of the handbags are created in South Korea. They come in many different styles, including totes, shoulder bags, cross-body bags, backpacks and clutches. Prices range from $58 to $148. Each bag features a colored ribbon based on the cause it represents. Angela and Roi have teamed up with several different charities—one for each cause they support. For each designer bag purchased, $5 is donated to the charity represented by the color of the ribbon. Each cause is assigned a "special day" when $10 will be donated to charity for each handbag bought for that particular cause. For instance, October 6 is the "special day" for breast cancer awareness. Ten dollars will be donated to The Ellie Fund for each bag with a pink ribbon purchased on that day. (Below are the causes and charities represented by each ribbon color.) On June 2, 2014, Angela & Roi began connecting customers with the cancer and disease patients who they helped through their purchases. Customers now receive a postcard with each purchased handbag. They are able to read the patient's story and send the card back with get-well wishes. Angela & Roi encourage custom- ers to take a photo of the postcard and post it to their Facebook and Instagram pages before they send it off. For more information or to purchase Angela & Roi handbags, visit www.angelaroi.com or call the com- pany at (617) 650-7222.
