The Capital Area American Heart Association hosted the annual Go Red for Women luncheon on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Raising Cane's River Center. Stephanie Hughson, Vice President at Regions Bank ,served as the 2017 Go Red Chair. The event was attended by over 800 members of the community as well as Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and First Lady of Louisiana Donna Edwards. The event was glowing with red as attendees joined together to honor those lost to heart disease and reflect on the work left to be done. The keynote speaker was heart transplant survivor Madeline Jones. The Go Red for Women campaign is more than a message. It's a nationwide movement that celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to wipe out this number one killer. Over 10 years ago, when the campaign started, many were stunned to learn just how many women are affected by heart disease. Grandmothers, mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are dying at the rate of one per minute, because they didn't know that heart disease kills. Go Red for Women raises awareness of the danger heart disease poses to women and helps them make choices to reduce their personal risk. Per the American Heart Association, one in three women is affected by heart disease. Simply stated, there is no greater killer of American women. That is a startling statistic that needs to be shared with more women. Baton Rouge needs to rally together as a community to make preventative care of heart dis- ease a top priority. Believing you are low-risk for heart disease is not enough for a killer that does not discriminate against age, race, social status, neigh- borhood or gender. Eighty percent of heart disease is preventative and Go Red calls upon women to know their key health numbers to stop this number one killer of women. By Linzy Cotaya 24
