34 34 y ears ago I had the distinct pleasure of visiting The h enderson Park Inn in Destin, an adults-only resort where you're pampered from the moment you step foot in the Nantucket-style inn. It's a romantic getaway with extensive amenities, breathtaking Gulf views and a buffer from beach crowds due to the h enderson Beach State Park next door . Quiet beach access, relaxing accommodations—what a nice respite from the crowds of Destin. Now, there's more! Dunavant Enterprises, Inc., a family owned and operated business out of Memphis, owns The Henderson Park Inn and has now opened a larger property next door, The Henderson Beach Resort. This 170-guest room hotel is family oriented but there's plenty of pampering to go around. Built to resemble a grand Southern hotel of yesteryear, the Henderson features massive porches over- looking the neighboring 208-acre park of live oak canopies and a protected beach. There's plenty of seating inside as well in the expansive open-air lobby that's dubbed the "living room" in an effort to make custom- ers feel at home. Everywhere are delicate touches that add to its charm—reclaimed beams and trusses, gorgeous crown molding, windows letting in the brilliant emerald Gulf colors and wooden floors visitors would swear are from another century. Throughout the resort are 465 pieces of artwork created by 13 local artists, from glass art by Mary Hong to photographs culled from the 1940s and '50s and everything in between. Even handmade furniture dots the hallways. There are several restaurants, from the Gulf-to-table Primrose with Chef Michael Katz to the Sprinkles Ice Cream Shop next to the children's activity center. Visitors may also enjoy small plates and signature cocktails in the octagonal-shaped Horizons Bar, where at sunset a staff member dressed as a boat captain rings a bell to the four compass points. Story and Photos by Cheré Coen Destin's New Kid on the Beach Henderson Beach Resort of Destin. Primrose restaurant at the Henderson Beach Resort. The lobby of the Henderson Beach Resort is labeled the "living room" in an effort to make customers feel at home.
