I'm not alone in thinking t exas could be another country. t hey talk funny, for one thing. Heading north out of Austin into the Texas Hill Country visitors reach the town of Burnet, a name which looks like it should be pronounced Burn-ette. At least for someone like me hailing from a state seeped in French heritage. "It's Burn-it, dern-it," said Burnet County Judge James Oakley, adding with a grin, "Learn it." The town is nestled within what is called the Highland Lakes Region, dating back to the mid- 1800s when Texas pioneers routinely fought Comanches. Fort Croghan was constructed to protect residents from native raids but the roll- ing hills and numerous rivers attracted many and the fort was later abandoned as the Comanches disappeared. The Lower Colorado River Authority began damming the river in the 1930s, creating region- al "lakes," including Lake Buchanon. As you may have guessed, it's not pronounced after the former president but rather as "Buck-Cannon." Like I said, it's go your own way in Texas, and that's a good thing. It reminds us of this country's uniqueness and diversity. It's Burn-it, d ern-it Story and Photos by Cheré Coen Log Country Cove offers luxury cabins on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. Lake Buchanon is home to numerous bald eagles. r e A d u S O N L I N e A t w w w . C I t y S O C I A L . C O m 50
