C o M Each year, the U.S. sees an estimated 380,000 babies born prematurely; that's roughly 1 in 10 who're born prior to the 37th week of a pregnancy. One such infant is Gem Monks of Gonzales. Gem was born over 2 months prematurely, weighing less than 2 pounds and plagued with digestive issues, hernias, jaundice, Bradycardia and a low red blood cell count. Like many infants born too early, she spent the first few weeks of her life fighting to survive in a hospital NICU. Statistics indicate that premature birth is the leading cause of infant deaths here in the U.S. Infants who survive a premature birth are reported to face serious, often lifelong health conditions such as difficulty breathing, vision loss, cerebral palsy and mental disabilities. Hence, there's never been a greater need to show support and lend a helping hand to programs that assist infants and their families struggling with such realities. For the Monks family, and countless others, that program is the March of Dimes and its annual walking event, March for Babies. Recently named an Ambassador family for the Greater Baton Rouge Area (GBR), the now 1½-year-old Gem and her family are committed to seeing that all infants are born healthy and speaking about the causes and dangers of premature birth. They invite everyone in GBR to join them and walk in the March for Babies event. By walking in March for Babies, participants can help raise awareness and funds used towards research about how to prevent premature birth, as well as provide assistance to infants and their families afflicted by it. March for Babies takes place annually in cities across the U.S. This year, residents of the GBR Area can take part on March 24th, 9.a.m., at LSU's Old Front 9. You can register for the event at marchforbabies. org/event/batonrouge as an individual, or sign up as a team with your friends, family or co-workers. Also remember to donate so that you can help infants be born at the right time, with all the health and happiness they and their families deserve! For more information, please visit marchofdimes.org.
